II-V Patterns are Important in Learning the jazz Language. You will come across many jazz tunes with II-V chord changes. It is important that you master these phrases so you can master the language of jazz.
II-V patterns can consist of arpeggios, scale tones, approach notes, altered notes, various rhythms and scale patterns. The more II-V patterns you embed in your jazz vocabulary, the more you can speak the language of jazz.
In this lesson we apply the II-V pattern on the tune “Satin Doll” by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. This tune has many II-V chord changes. It’s important to know how to play the II-V pattern on jazz standards because many jazz standards have these chords.
